Short and Sweet: Regression Toward the Mean
Statistical tendency of a data series to gravitate towards the center of a distribution, provided it starts on the either end of the distribution and is free to fluctuate. Children of very tall parents, for example, tend to be taller than the average children but shorter than the average of the parents' heights. Also called regression to the mean.
