Enlightenment as Deism
Isn't this interesting from Richard Wolin's The Seduction of Unreason?
"Yet in the eighteenth century, 'the rights of man and citizen" evolved from the eminently metaphysical idea of modern natural law."
This sounds right though I have never focused on the proposition so concretely: enlightenment thinkers in this vein were effectively deists of a kind.
