Egads! That is a product of cultural studies, ie the magnification of cultural trivia, and it gets in the way of seeing normally. The democrats were trying to win an election; they had a charismatic candidate whose very presence, as a black man, was seen as an astounding achievement both for him and the culture. Go for it. That is no different from a zillion other campaigns in democracies. What matters is the democracy, the voting, the peaceful transition, no-one killed at polls,. and on and on and on. It remains true that a black president with a weird name became president. If that doesn't resonate with you, as either a nice liberal or a nasty racist, then you miss the main thing. If Obama turns out to be a rather poor president, it will only show that, well, black folks, even those who have done well, are only human too.
